When we estimate a long-distance move from a 1 bedroom apartment, we begin with the furniture and boxes you’re taking and the two addresses involved. A bed, small sofa and twenty boxes may make a fairly modest shipment, while a sectional, dining set and furniture from a storage unit can take up considerably more space, even when both homes have the same number of rooms.
Among our interstate bookings scheduled from January through April 2026, the median estimate was $2,601 for shipments measuring 250–399 cubic feet and $3,909 for those measuring 400–549 cubic feet. These bookings covered different routes and household types, including smaller moves that may resemble a one-bedroom apartment. The miles between your addresses, the furniture you keep and the loading conditions at each building determine what goes into your own estimate.

| 150–250 miles | $1,165–$2,650 | Short interstate move |
| 250–500 miles | $1,380–$3,085 | Regional relocation |
| 500–1,000 miles | $1,845–$4,020 | Mid-distance interstate move |
| 1,000–1,500 miles | $2,200–$4,695 | Longer route across several states |
| 1,500–2,500 miles | $2,335–$4,860 | Major cross-country relocation |

What Makes a One-Bedroom Move Expensive?
A small apartment can still take several hours to empty. Along with the bedroom furniture, you may have a desk, heavy shelving, exercise equipment or boxes in a basement locker. Those belongings will be counted when the carrier assesses the shipment, whether they have been in daily use or stored away for years.
Getting the furniture out can take as long as loading it onto the truck. In a fourth-floor walk-up, the crew has to carry each piece down the stairs; where the building has a service elevator, there may be a limited time slot for using it. A long walk to the truck, restricted parking or delicate pieces that need packing should all be discussed before you receive the estimate.
If your lease ends on the last Saturday of August, there may be fewer pickup dates available than there would be on a weekday later in the fall. Where the move-out date is flexible, ask about nearby dates when gathering quotes, particularly during the summer.
How to Measure a One-Bedroom Moving Inventory
An apartment’s floor area says little about the space its furniture will occupy inside a moving truck. A mostly empty 700-square-foot home may produce a smaller shipment than a 500-square-foot apartment full of books and storage boxes. Include what is in the closets, balcony, garage and any off-site storage locker when you prepare your inventory.
For a rough volume calculation, measure each large item’s outside length × width × height in inches, then divide by 1,728. An 84-inch sofa that’s 36 inches deep and 34 inches high measures about 59.5 cubic feet. A queen mattress measuring 80 × 60 × 12 inches adds about 33.3 cubic feet, and twenty medium cartons at around 3 cubic feet each add another 60. The dresser, bed frame, television stand and kitchen boxes still have to be counted.
U-Haul’s standard small, medium and large moving boxes hold approximately 1.5, 3 and 4.5 cubic feet. Thirty medium boxes and ten large ones therefore occupy around 135 cubic feet. Their weight depends on what’s packed inside: boxes of books can be much heavier than the same number filled with clothing, and some interstate estimates are based on shipment weight.
If you plan to dismantle the bed frame or remove a table’s legs, include that detail in the inventory. Large mirrors, glass tops and musical instruments may need protective packing as well. Our box-size guide helps with counting cartons, while the moving cost calculator provides an early cost estimate once you have the addresses and an approximate shipment size.
What Our 2026 Booked Estimates Show About Shipment Size
Across the 810 bookings in the 250–399-cubic-foot group, the middle half of our estimates fell between $2,256 and $3,039. For the 367 bookings at 400–549 cubic feet, the middle half ranged from $3,303 to $4,636. The routes and services differed, so even shipments of similar volume could receive quite different estimates.
Our records include the estimated cubic footage, but no bedroom count. Someone moving out of a studio with large furniture could have as much to transport as someone leaving a sparsely furnished one-bedroom. What matters during the inventory review is the furniture, boxes and anything stored elsewhere that will go onto the truck.
If you decide to leave an unwanted sectional or dining table behind, ask for an updated estimate before booking. Removing one large piece can change the shipment space more than removing a handful of boxes, although the route and crew still carry their own costs.

How Do You Measure the Distance of a Long-Distance Move?
Enter both addresses into a driving-directions map to check the road mileage. A trip that looks short on a map can be longer by truck, particularly where highways follow a bridge or pass around a mountain range. Give the carrier the exact buildings as well as the ZIP codes, since a narrow street or restricted loading area may affect how the furniture is collected.
An 800-mile trip sits within the 500–1,000-mile range above. That distance will influence the transportation charge, though the amount of furniture and the work at the two buildings still matter. There isn’t a single price per mile that accounts for everything involved in moving an apartment.
Moves across state lines fall under federal interstate household-goods rules, including requirements for written estimates and, with applicable exceptions, a survey of the items being moved. A longer move within one state can be governed differently. The FMCSA sets out the federal requirements for estimating transportation and other charges.
Professional Movers vs. PODS vs. a Rental Truck
If you’re comfortable driving a rental truck, you can carry your furniture out, load it, make the journey and unload it yourself. A container company handles the long-distance drive while you arrange the carrying at both addresses. With an interstate mover, the assigned crew loads and unloads the shipment when those services are included in the written estimate.
| Moving option | 2026 price reference | What remains to arrange |
|---|---|---|
| Professional movers | $2,335–$4,860 for 1,500–2,500 miles, studio/one-bedroom category | Check packing, storage, specialty items and access charges |
| PODS container | About $2,302–$3,889 for a one-bedroom cross-country move | Loading/unloading labor, extra containers and storage time |
| One-way rental truck | Price depends on the dates, truck and pickup/delivery locations | Fuel, allowed miles, tolls, lodging, driving and labor |
Published references: moveBuddha’s studio/one-bedroom distance table and its October 14, 2026 PODS study. These price samples aren’t matched quotes for the same household and route. Rental-truck providers price specific one-way reservations, so a universal all-in number would be misleading.
A third-floor apartment without an elevator can change the economics of a container move. You may need to hire a crew to carry furniture downstairs and another to unload it after delivery. If friends can help at both ends, those labor charges may be avoided; otherwise they belong alongside the container price when you’re comparing it with a moving-company quote.
A one-way rental truck may suit a small shipment if you have time for the drive and people to help with the furniture. Price the truck for your dates and destination, then allow for fuel, tolls, lodging and any hired help. Our guide to moving yourself long distance goes into those costs.
What Should a Written One-Bedroom Moving Quote Include?
Use the same furniture list when requesting each estimate, including anything in storage or at a second pickup address. Note the floor number, elevator access, parking restrictions and pieces needing special handling. Packing, temporary storage or a smaller shuttle truck may be charged separately if they are required.
Read the written estimate before accepting it. For interstate moves, the FMCSA distinguishes binding estimates, which cover the listed goods and services under the agreed terms, from non-binding estimates, where the mover’s tariff and the shipment actually moved determine the final charge. Federal rules also limit how much can be demanded at delivery on a non-binding estimate for the listed goods and services, with separate provisions for additional charges. The FMCSA’s estimate guidance explains the terms.
Confirm the pickup and delivery periods and whether the quoted services include carrying the furniture into your new apartment. If the kitchen still needs packing or a large truck cannot reach the entrance, bring that up before you sign rather than discovering the charge on moving day.
Is It Worth Moving All the Furniture?
A good mattress or a solid dresser may be worth bringing across the country. An inexpensive bookcase or worn sofa can be harder to justify, particularly when it won’t fit the new apartment. Check the doorway and elevator dimensions at the destination, and compare the cost of replacing bulky furniture before adding it to the shipment.
Selling a large sofa or dining set may reduce the space required, but the truck, transportation and crew still carry their own costs. Once you’ve decided what stays behind, get the inventory and written estimate updated. A much smaller load may also make a container or rental truck easier to manage.
Get an Estimate for Your 1-Bedroom Interstate Move
We arrange interstate household moves through authorized motor carriers. If you’re leaving a one-bedroom apartment, tell us where the furniture will be collected and delivered, the dates you have in mind and anything that needs to be packed or collected from storage. The assigned carrier handles the loading and transportation included in your agreement.
You can request a moving quote once you’ve settled on the furniture you’re taking and the two addresses. That will give you a carrier-arranged price to compare with the cost of renting a container or driving the shipment yourself.
