    What Is a Moving Quote?

A moving quote is a moving company's projection of what your relocation will cost. It is built from the volume and weight of what you own, the distance between your two addresses, how easily a truck and crew can reach each door, and any services you add on top, such as packing or storage.

Getting one costs nothing and commits you to nothing. Its purpose is to let you budget properly and compare companies on the same basis before you hand anyone a deposit.

Two words get used interchangeably and should not be. A quote is the price you are given. An estimate is the document behind it, and on an interstate move it is a federally regulated instrument that determines what you can be charged at delivery. Which type of estimate you accept matters more than most people realise, which is why it has its own section below.

The general advice, which we will give you even though we would rather you booked with us, is to gather more than one quote and compare them on structure rather than headline number. A price that excludes packing, valuation, or a shuttle is not cheaper. It is just less complete.

    What a Good Quote Includes
    💰

    The Total Price, in Writing

A number said aloud on a phone call is not a quote. It carries none of the federal protections a written estimate does.

    📑

Which Type of Estimate It Is

Binding, non-binding, or binding not-to-exceed. This decides whether your delivery-day invoice can climb above the quote.

    🚚

    Who Is Actually Moving You

The carrier's name, USDOT number, and MC number, so you can verify them yourself before you sign.

    📦

    Every Service, Itemised

Transport, fuel, valuation coverage, packing, stairs, shuttle, storage. Anything absent from the quote is a line that can appear later.

    📅

    Your Delivery Window

Interstate carriers commit to a spread of dates rather than a single day unless you pay for guaranteed delivery. Yours should be on the paperwork.

    Before You Fill Anything In

How Much Does a Long Distance Move Cost?

You should not have to hand over your phone number to find out roughly what you are looking at. Find your home size below for a planning range drawn from the quotes we actually issue.

Studio or light 1-bedroomUnder 400 cu ft
    $2,000 – $2,900
1 to 2 bedrooms400 – 800 cu ft · the most common move we quote
    $2,900 – $4,900
    2 to 3 bedrooms with a garage800 – 1,200 cu ft
    $5,200 – $8,000
    3 to 4 bedrooms, fully furnished1,200 – 1,600 cu ft
    $7,600 – $11,400
    4+ bedrooms1,600+ cu ft
    $10,900 – $17,000

Notice what is not driving those numbers: distance. How much you own matters more. San Francisco to New York medians lower than Los Angeles to Portland, despite five times the mileage, because the shipment is half the size. If your quote needs to come down, the lever is what goes on the truck, not where it goes.

Planning ranges from Coastal Moving Services quote data, [[DATE RANGE]], across 2,002 state route combinations. Not offers. Your price depends on inventory, route, dates, access and services. Full route-by-route data is here.

    What Determines Your Moving Quote

Six things set the number. They are listed roughly in order of how much they move it, which is not the order most people expect.

    01

    How Much You Own

The largest single factor, measured in cubic feet or weight. Our data puts a sub-400 cu ft move at a median of $2,441 and an 800 to 1,200 cu ft move at $6,641. Same route, nearly triple the price. This is also the one variable you fully control.

    02

    Distance and Route

Mileage matters, though less than volume, and popular corridors often price better than remote ones because carriers already run them. A cross-country move with a small shipment can cost less than a regional move with a full house.

    03

    Access at Both Addresses

Stairs, a building with no service elevator, a long carry from the truck to the door, or a street too narrow for a full trailer. If a shuttle is needed, everything gets handled twice and you pay for both. This is the factor most often left out of a quote request and most often added on the day.

    04

    Services You Add

Packing, unpacking, storage in transit, vehicle transport, appliance disconnection. Full packing is the big one. Ask whether it is priced per box or per hour, because that detail changes the total more than anything you will negotiate.

    05

    When You Move

May through September is peak, and weekends and the last three days of any month are when everyone's lease turns over. Moving midweek, mid-month, off-season is worth 15 to 30 percent for no change in service.

    06

    Specialty and High-Value Items

Pianos, gun safes, pool tables, large artwork, gym equipment. These need the right equipment and often carry a flat fee each. Naming them at quote stage costs you a line item. Discovering them on move day costs more.

    Moving Budget Quote Types

    Binding vs. Non-Binding Moving Quotes

On an interstate move this decides whether the number you were quoted is the number you pay. All three types are governed by federal rules under the FMCSA, and your paperwork must say which one you have.

    Non-Binding Estimate

The company's best projection, with the final invoice settled once your shipment is weighed. Your protection is the 110 percent rule: the mover cannot collect more than 110 percent of the quote at delivery, and anything above that you have 30 days to pay. The exposure is real if the estimator under-counted, which is why a video or in-home survey matters more here than anywhere else.

    Binding Estimate

A fixed price for the services listed, whatever the shipment actually weighs. You pay the quoted figure even if it comes in lighter, which is the trade for certainty. Companies price these slightly higher because they are carrying the risk you would otherwise carry.

    Binding Not-to-Exceed

The strongest of the three for a customer. The carrier sets a ceiling, and if your actual weight lands under the estimate you pay the lower actual figure rather than the ceiling. You pay whichever is less. Ask for this one by name, because it is rarely volunteered.

    Accuracy

What Changes Your Moving Quote After You Get It

A quote is only as good as the information behind it. These are the six things that move a final invoice away from the number you were given, and every one of them is avoidable at quote stage.

    Rooms You Did Not Mention

The attic, the garage, the shed, the storage unit across town. If an estimator never saw it, it was never priced. This is the most common reason a delivery invoice surprises somebody, and it is entirely preventable in the first conversation.

    Inventory That Keeps Changing

Adding a bedroom's worth of furniture after the quote is issued changes the weight, the truck space, and sometimes the crew. Small additions are normal and easy to absorb. Wholesale revisions mean a new quote.

    Access Discovered on the Day

A third-floor walk-up nobody mentioned, a loading dock that needs booking, a street a 53-foot trailer cannot enter. If a shuttle has to be called, your goods are handled twice and the bill reflects it. Tell us about the stairs now.

A Date That Moves Into Peak

Shifting from a Tuesday in October to a Saturday in July is a 15 to 30 percent swing before anything else changes. If your date is uncertain, say so and we will price the window.

    Packing Added Late

Deciding a fortnight out that you would rather not pack the kitchen is completely reasonable, and it is also new labour and new materials. Flag it at quote stage even if you are only considering it.

    A Storage Gap

When your closing dates do not line up, your shipment goes into storage in transit and gets loaded and unloaded an additional time. You pay for the space and for the second handling, so it is worth pricing before you need it.

    Be Prepared

How to Get an Accurate Moving Quote

The more accurate your details, the more accurate your price—and the smaller the gap between your quote and your final invoice.

You do not need a room-by-room spreadsheet. A rough inventory, your preferred moving date, and photos of bulky items are usually enough for a meaningful first estimate.

    What to Prepare

Five details that help us price your move accurately

    1. 01

      Full Origin and Destination Addresses

Exact addresses establish mileage and help identify access issues such as stairs, lift-only buildings, or streets that cannot accommodate a full-size truck.

    2. 02

Your Target Move Date or Window

A specific date or a flexible two-week window both work. Greater flexibility may also reduce pricing outside peak season.

    3. 03

      Home Size and Rough Inventory

Share the bedroom count, how fully furnished the property is, and whether you have items in a garage, attic, basement, or storage unit.

    4. 04

      Specialty or High-Value Items

Mention pianos, safes, pool tables, oversized artwork, antiques, or other items that may require specialist equipment.

    5. 05

      Any Additional Services

Let us know whether you need packing, temporary storage, unpacking, or vehicle transportation included in the quote.

      FAQ

      Free Moving Quote Questions, Answered

The questions we hear most often before customers submit a request.

What is a free moving quote?
A moving company's projection of what your relocation will cost, based on how much you own, the distance, access at both addresses, and any services you add. It costs nothing and commits you to nothing. Its purpose is to let you budget and compare companies on the same basis before anyone takes a deposit.
How much does a long distance move cost?
The median quote in our data is $3,364. A studio or light one-bedroom typically runs $2,000 to $2,900, one to two bedrooms $2,900 to $4,900, and two to three bedrooms $5,200 to $8,000. Shipment size drives it more than distance does, so the band above is organised by how much you own rather than how far you are going.
Can I get a free moving quote without calling?
Yes. Fill in the form with your route, move date, and home size, and your written quote comes back by email. You never have to pick up the phone. The pricing band on this page also gives you a planning figure straight away without submitting anything at all. If you would rather talk it through, call (334) 659-1878, but that is your choice and not a condition.
What is the difference between a binding and non-binding quote?
A binding quote is a locked price you pay whatever the scale says at delivery. A non-binding quote is based on projected weight and, under FMCSA rules, cannot be collected above 110 percent of the original figure at delivery, with any balance due within 30 days. A third option, binding not-to-exceed, sets a ceiling but charges you the lower of the estimate or the actual cost. Ask for that one by name. We tell you in writing which type your quote is before you sign.
Why did my moving quote change?
Usually because something was not in the original inventory: a garage, an attic, a storage unit, or furniture added afterwards. The other common causes are access discovered on the day, such as stairs or a street a full trailer cannot enter, a date that shifted into peak season, packing added late, or a storage gap between your closing dates. Every one of those is avoidable at quote stage.
How do I get an accurate moving quote?
Give exact addresses rather than cities, include every room including the garage and attic, name your specialty items, mention stairs and parking at both ends, and say whether your date is firm. Photographs of anything bulky are worth more than a description. Accuracy at this stage is what keeps your invoice matching your quote.
Will my information be shared with other moving companies?
No. Your details stay with Coastal Moving Services. We do not sell contact information and we do not distribute your request to competing brokers or to a lead exchange. One company contacts you, and it is us.
Is Coastal a moving company or a broker?
A broker. We hold FMCSA broker authority under USDOT# 4090919 and MC# 1558401, verifiable on FMCSA SAFER. We do not own trucks or transport your belongings ourselves. We arrange your move with FMCSA-authorised motor carriers, and your final charges come from the carrier's published tariff, available for inspection on request. You get the carrier's name, USDOT number, and MC number before you sign anything.
How long does it take to receive a quote?
Most requests get a same-day response during business hours. Call (334) 659-1878 if you need pricing faster.
Is there any cost or obligation to request a free moving quote?
No. We send you a written price, you review it, and you decide whether to move forward. There is no fee and no obligation.
Should I get more than one moving quote?
Yes, and compare them on structure rather than headline number. A quote that excludes packing, valuation coverage, a shuttle, or stair charges is not cheaper than one that includes them. It is less complete. Check what each price actually covers before you compare the totals.
      Do you handle local moves?
We coordinate long distance and interstate moves. If your move stays inside one metro area, you are usually better served calling local moving companies directly, since a local job is billed hourly and does not need the carrier network that makes an interstate move work. We would rather tell you that now than take your details.
Can I get a quote if my move date is not confirmed?
Yes. Give us a target window and we will check carrier availability across those dates. Flexibility helps, and outside the May to September peak it is worth 15 to 30 percent.
Will I know which moving company is handling my shipment?
Yes, before you sign. You get the carrier's name, contact number, USDOT number, and MC number, and you can verify them on FMCSA SAFER yourself.
      When will my belongings arrive?
Interstate carriers quote a delivery spread rather than a single date, and it can run from a few days to a couple of weeks depending on distance. Guaranteed delivery dates exist as a paid upgrade. We give you your spread in writing up front so you can plan around the far end of it rather than the near end.
How far in advance should I get a moving quote?
Six to eight weeks for a summer move, and two to four weeks off-peak. Late bookings in peak season take whatever capacity is left, and what is left is priced accordingly.
